THE SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL AHMED-I HĀNĪ SYMPOSIUM

“THE INTELLECTUAL LEGACY OF MAWLĀNĀ JALĀL AL-DĪN RŪMĪ AND ANATOLIAN SAGES"

In commemoration of Mawlānā Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, the year 2023, coinciding with the 750th anniversary of his death, has been declared as the "Year of Mawlānā" by the Presidential Decree No. 2023/1. Within this context, it has been decided the theme of this year's International Ahmed-i Hānī Symposium, which is annually organized by our Faculty, to be "The Intellectual Legacy of Mawlānā and Anatolian Sages" with the aim of promoting Mawlānā's cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations, and encouraging the society to learn, internalize, live and perpetuate his exemplary life, philosophy and ideas.

Throughout critical and challenging periods of history, there have always been significant figures who have guided their societies, shown them the way, and strived to keep them standing. These spiritual architects of society, so to speak, have not only guided their own societies, but also subsequent generations with their exemplary personalities and spiritual legacies. They maintain the dynamism in society by serving as a source of light not only for their own era but also for future ones, and they reinforce the cultural bonds that strengthen society. Mawlānā, who’s tomb is in the city of Konya in Anatolia, played a significant role in Turkish-Islamic thought and known as the sultan of the Anatolian sages who left their mark on history with their exemplary lives and cultural legacies.

Mawlānā, as a value of our cultural history, has had a profound impact worldwide, both with the ideas he put forward during his lifetime and with the Sūfī teachings developed around his thoughts after his death. He is certainly an international figure, embraced not only by a single nation but by all of humanity. He adopting love for all humanity, was able to embrace all of humanity without compromising the constants of the sacred law, and was able to think and act with a tolerant, integrative interpretation of religion, in line with his motto: “I am like compasses: While I stand firmly on sharia with one foot, I walk between seventy-two nations with the other.”. He also expressed that the source of his religious-Sūfī thought, which is at the center of his life philosophy, is the Qur’ān and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as in his poem:.

“As long as I carry this soul in my body,

I will remain a humble servant of the Qur’an,

I will be the soil of the path of the chosen Muhammad.”

The fact that his philosophy, intellectual legacy and ideas have found resonance all over the world is demonstrated by the academic studies conducted on him and the translations of his works into many world languages.
